Journey: From Nothing to Sultan
Welcome to the official artist page for Muxaveli, also known as MQZ – The Sultan of Independent Hip-Hop/Rap.
My Genesis Story
Born in the United Kingdom on December 10, 1982, my early years were filled with the vibrant energy of Bollywood movies and the infectious dance songs of my favorite hero, Govinda. In 1989, my family and I moved to Karachi, Pakistan, a beautiful country that became my home. My sister and I were captivated by music, not just listening and singing along, but also writing our own songs. Those early attempts, penned at just 11 years old, were the first sparks of a lifelong passion.
My musical palette has always been diverse, shaped by a myriad of incredible artists. From the golden voices of Mohd. Rafi, Mehdi Hassan, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Lata Mangeshkar, Alka Yagnik, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Kumar Sanu, and Asha Bhosle, to the legendary compositions of R.D. Burman and the iconic sounds of Junoon, these artists laid the foundation for my love of melody and storytelling.
As I grew, my musical tastes evolved. I immersed myself in heavy metal and rock music. Then, one pivotal day, I heard Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady” performed at the MTV Awards, and saw Limp Bizkit. This discovery led me to immediately buy their albums, “Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water” and “The Marshall Mathers LP.” On the same shelf, I found Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” and Tupac’s “Strictly 4 My N*.” These albums became the soundtrack to my workouts, played repeatedly from start to finish. Tupac’s album, in particular, resonated deeply with me.
A few years later, the film 8 Mile ignited my interest in freestyle rapping, inspired by Eminem’s portrayal of B-Rabbit. Throughout my life, Michael Jackson remained a profound influence; “Thriller” was my childhood anthem, but as I matured, “Off The Wall” truly captured my imagination.
My inspirations extend across genres and eras, including the soulful artistry of Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Rick James, Prince, Bob Marley, and Damian Marley. In the realm of hip-hop, I’ve been profoundly influenced by the lyrical prowess of Nas, Jay-Z, Tech N9ne, Immortal Technique, Public Enemy, Pharoahe Monch, Bohemia, Notorious B.I.G., Ol’ Dirty Bastard (ODB), and the unforgettable hooks of Nate Dogg. And of course, DMX holds a special place, with his album “The Great Depression” being a particular favorite.
The Rise of an Independent Artist
In 2014, I stumbled upon an online recording studio called UJAM. This was a game-changer. I began writing and singing my own songs, keeping them under three minutes and crafting instrumentals to my liking. At the time, I was unaware of the intricacies of mastering or what a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) was. I simply believed I had great music and was ready to take the world by storm. After some research, I found a distributor and made my songs available on all major digital music stores and streaming services.
My initial releases, however, were far from perfect. The songs were often distorted, plagued by noise, clipping, and synchronization issues. I soon learned that a USB microphone, without proper mastering, wouldn’t meet industry standards. With no formal sound engineering courses under my belt, Google became my ultimate teacher. I searched, read, and diligently pieced together the knowledge needed to refine my craft. This ongoing process has transformed me into a more skilled songwriter, producer, composer, performer, mixer, and master of my own product.
Initially, I released music under the stage name “Donxila,” a fusion of “Don” (Dawn) and “Xila” or “Zilla” (Urdu for District), signifying “The Rising Sun District.” However, I eventually retired this name to pursue hip-hop music as “MQZ,” using my initials. I also adopted the alias “Muxaveli,” a nod to Tupac and my admiration for the legend, blending his influence with my own name. I proudly identify as a rapper and MC, releasing new music as MQZ—because that’s authentically me. My aim isn’t to project a “gangsta” image; instead, I delve into topics that resonate with me, transforming lingering thoughts into songs through my pen.
Evolution and Artistic Vision
As I continue to evolve, I’ve embraced “Muxaveli” as my primary artist name. This transition marks a significant step in my artistic journey, much like DMX’s use of “X” in his name, my use of “X” in Muxaveli signifies growth and transformation.
I’ve learned the critical importance of artist promotion and fan base building. While I initially believed good music would be discovered organically, I now understand the power of marketing and widespread exposure. Though I recognize these industry dynamics, my core focus remains on creating the music I love. I trust that if the music is good, people will find and appreciate it in their own time. My main drive is to stay hungry and keep grinding, continuously honing my talent.
Along the way, I’ve developed skills in artwork design and sound engineering, recognizing their importance for a complete artistic package. On December 7, 2017, I self-released my first two albums. While the sound quality wasn’t initially where I wanted it to be, I’ve since released numerous projects, which I affectionately refer to as mixtapes. Through consistent practice and experience, I’ve now focused on creating and releasing four new albums, all of which are available on my Bandcamp page.
My artistic goal is to craft lyrically rich content, challenging myself with complex and simple themes alike, while also incorporating singing. My albums offer a blend of freestyles and meticulously crafted tracks to ensure diverse and engaging content. This mentality will guide all my future music, balancing serious topics with fun, lighthearted songs—because it takes true talent to be happy.
Ultimately, my music aims to spark conversations or simply invite people to have fun. In an era of short attention spans and monetization, I understand the need for artists to be a brand. My goal is to get noticed, not through marketing gimmicks, but through the genuine quality of my art. It’s a challenging path, but not impossible.
